Article: A Death in Tokyo (2022)

It’s been a good four years since fans of Keigo Higashino’s Detective Kaga series had something new to pour over (in English, anyway), the last being 2018’s Newcomer, but their patience has been rewarded with A Death in Tokyo, the long overdue localization of the original Japanese edition published way back in 2011. There was even a live-action adaptation starring Hiroshi Abe as the famous detective back in 2012, meaning unless you’re fluent in Japanese (or don’t mind subtitles), this will likely be your first acquaintance with it.

Some franchises come and go, but there's others that just never die. Consider, for instance, what the world would be like if we didn't get annual releases of Chulip games.

It’s the Consumer Electronics Show for 2023! The world’s biggest technology showcase has come and gone once again, but there’s still plenty of amazing (and some less so) innovations in the world of tech and gadgetry to fill up an entire episode, and that’s exactly what you’re going to get in this extra-large, extra-special recap of what went down in Las Vegas.
Our own Senior Tech editor Herman Exum and innocent bystander Nate Evans are joined by frequent (and favorite!) guest Ben Crossman from The Computer America Show to once talk, discuss, and rabble-rouse over what consumers should expect to see over the upcoming year - provided any of it actually comes out, that is.

Article: The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)

Tuesday Jan 10, 2023
Laughably low in concept, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin is, on the surface, about a simple man living on a small Irish isle when his lifelong best friend abruptly and inexplicably decides he doesn’t want to be friends with him anymore. From a writer-director who has yet to make a bad movie, McDonagh’s fourth feature is, as expected, much deeper than its pretext.

Back in the day if a game was released in a questionable state, there was a fair chance it was just going to stay that way. Only the most critical bugs were likely to get patched, so if a problem wasn't making your game crash, chances are it just wasn't going to get fixed.

Thursday Dec 08, 2022
On this highly collectible episode of the Popzara Podcast our own trainers Cory Galliher and Nia Bothwell join the gym to take on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, their journeys to becoming true Pokémon Masters, and the evolution of all-things Pokémon.
Do Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have technical hiccups? You bet!. Does that detract much from the experience? Not really. It’s a snark-free chat about the latest chapter in one of Nintendo’s best-selling franchises, as well as the evolution of Satoshi Tajiri / Game Freak's eternally popular series from the early days of 2D pocket monsters to recent 3D updates like Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
It’s a journey from Game Boy to Switch and everything in-between, and who better than a duo of true Poke Nerds taking a little nostalgia trip with a few thousand of their dearest friends?

Movie Time! Dare to Be Stupid: UHF (1989) and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
Wednesday Nov 23, 2022
Wednesday Nov 23, 2022
It’s Popzara’s Movie Time! Podcast!, where our own movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure.
Today’s episode it’s a double-dose of silliness as our hosts explore two comedies separated by three+ decades, yet firmly inside the wild, wacky, and wonderful world of the imitable, totally hospitable "Weird Al" Yankovic.
First up is 1989’s UHF, the first (and only) feature-film starring the polka playing impresario himself in a pastiche of comedy vignettes skewering everything from Conan, Rambo, and even the Mahatma. It’s a farce of epic proportions about the power of local broadcasting, imagination, and cheap labor. A box-office dud, it’s since became a major cult classic and early showcase for Micheal Richards, Fran Drescher, and spatulas.
Next is 2022’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, the “true” story of how a gifted young man was corrupted by the evil call of the accordion (i.e. the Devil’s Squeezebox). Just kidding! It’s actually Al’s Daniel Radcliffe-starring satirical spin on the typical dour ‘n dreary music biopics that scoop up statues come awards time. Will Weird Al ever win an Oscar? Who needs Oscars when you’ve got the power of polka!
